Reuters - Social networking sites "good for businesses"

This is a great article about the pros of Social Networking in the workplace, so long as it's done in moderation (where have I heard that before?).

Memo to AdAge's Jonah Bloom - the Internet is NOT destroying journalism

While I respect Jonah Bloom's recent video comment on the Most Dangerous Ideas of Public Relations for the Council of Public Relations summit, I must say I disagree.

I do believe he's right in saying that the traditional business model is on its knees and that print journalism is on the way out, albeit not for a few decades yet. I also see his point on how this time of transition within the media industry… Continue

Barista's announce Jack-in-the-Box invasion; still not going

I recognize that I may the last person in defiance of this trend, but it appears that Jack-in-the-Box is now taking a page from McDonald's recent playbook by experimenting with self-serve espresso machines in their restaurants (see this week's article in the San Diego Business Journal).

Ok, I get this much; quick service restaurants saw their market… Continue

AP Style Guide relevancy question; larger one looms

If you haven't checked out Jason Kintzler's PitchEngine network site, I would highly recommend you do. He wrote a terrific piece on now looming question about the relevancy of the AP Style Guide, the long-standing "bible" for PR and Journalist writing. Some of the folks he quoted also brought up the need for PR agencies to write clear, concise press… Continue

McCain staff calls another PR audible; tells team to simply "Go Long"

Political ideologies aside yet again, I have to question from a PR strategy point of view the myriad of audibles called by the campaign mangers for the Arizona Senator turned Republican Presidential Nominee. In the last six weeks, we've seen three seismic shifts in messaging; from "Experience" to "Change" then back to "Experience" followed by the ill-defined "Can't Trust The Other Guy" promotion.

These sudden changes bring me back to my college days, when Sundays always found a group… Continue

Clients - stop asking who I know, and start asking what I know!

I've seen an increasing trend of late with prospective clients. More and more of them are asking me at the initial meeting how many editors I personally know in certain industry trade or national business publications.

While I certainly understand the value of business relationships and the fact that some agencies profess to be experts in specific industries, the question still puzzles me. Do companies REALLY think that they'll get positive press simply because I know a reporter or… Continue
