Projections?

I'm curious for those in the PR agency business who believes they'll see an increase in revenues in 2010 or do you think income will be stagnant? As for us, we're going to be up nearly 30 percent this year thanks to sticking with our Pay-on-Performance model, and expect no less than the same for 2010. What say you? Continue

Skyline San Diego - What's Working in Exhibiting

I've just come across what I think is a really good white paper by Skyline San Diego on what's working in exhibiting.I've attached it to the end of this blog for download, but here's some key points in the analysis that I believe are very pertinent for marketers to view as they wrestle with setting their 2010 budgets:

AdAge - As Media Market Shrinks, PR Passes Up Reporters, Pitches Directly to Consumers

This article is well worth the read, particularly as it mentions how PR Agencies must look beyond traditional media relations and more toward engagement models. While I don't agree that the tactic of reaching out to newspapers, magazines and television stations is at all dead (even though giving them press releases is), this article clearly and accurately discusses how a multi-pronged approach to getting… Continue

Big Brother is alive and well - and at BevMo

Here in San Diego, we've got a supermarket chain of sorts that exclusively serves beer, wine and liquors called BevMo (formerly Beverages & More). Now being an avid fan of single malt scotch and high grade bourbons, I am a rewards member of this establishment, and have always found their selection… Continue

Fast Company - Blogging is Dead, Long Live Journalism

This article clearly points to the fact that bloggers - the good ones, mind you - are starting to emerge as true journalists. That doesn't mean the quality or integrity level is there yet, but it will be. Looks at leading groups like Voice of San Diego and the San Diego News Network as examples. And I assure you - more will follow.

Proof that philanthropy is good for business

We’ve always heard that giving back to the community is good for business. Well, here’s serious proof. Cali Bamboo has received no less than 10 local and national trade and business media coverage on their philanthropic actions as part of its affiliation for “1% for the Planet” organization. The hits were in key outlets that will not only bring new interest, but new customers. Take a look as just some of the coverage… Continue

I'm a featured expert on PRSA's Measurement Resources

I'm honored to have my article included as a primary resource for the national Public Relations Society of America's repository of references on measuring PR's value. It's truly humbling. Here's a link to the page as well as the highlighted excerpt:

Mark Weiner - Proving the Value of Public Relations Posted

I'm beginning to sound like a broken record here, but can't help it. This article by Mark Weiner on PRSA's comPRehension blog is good, but again fails to account for not only the need for agencies to measure their performance, but align fees accordingly a la "Pay-on-Performance." Regardless, I think it's worth the read.

BtoB Magazine - Relationship Troubles

I wholeheartedly agree with this article that agencies are in more trouble making their clients happy than ever before. I also believe that the piece touches one some of the key points, but not for the right reasons. It's not so much that companies are trying to figure out which firms have the right resources for them, but rather, which ones can deliver a return on investment; something most agencies would rather not do - because they flat out can't! It's certainly true in the PR world, which… Continue

PRSA Seeks Industry Agreement on Measurement Standards

I must admit that I'm not holding my breath that PR folks will do this. That's because agencies have resisted this for some time. And even if they do, I'm not putting forth much hope that they will tie their profits to achieving results under such industry-standard metrics. Though it would be nice - it's what I've been championing since launching this site and my firm, Stalwart Communications. Neverthe… Continue

How a boss' behavior can impact your job

If you've been following the David Letterman issue this week, this will make you laugh out loud. Schell - Employee Communications During Difficult Times

I'm a BIG fan of employee communications, stemming from my days as a U.S. Navy Public Affairs officer on an aircraft carrier, where my team and I ran four TV channels, an FM radio station and a daily newspaper - all for the nearly 6,000 Sailors and Marines onboard. Robin Schell, APR, provides a really good overview on PRSA's ComPREhension Blog of why such initiatives are super important in a rocky economy and how to g… Continue

Why national newspapers are having a tough time going local

I liken it to "putting a square peg in a round hole," and still believe that models like the one being used by the San Diego News Network still have a good chance to success despite what appears to be a growing trend of large conglomerates trying to make a go of it. What say you?
