Internal Communication Devices: How volume can hurt your reputation

During a recent visit to one of my favorite retail stores, I overheard two employees yelling at one another over their walkie talkies. The argument focused on their responsibilities and break times. Many large stores use wireless devices to maintain constant communication, but the problem I found in this situation was the volume on these devices was set too high. If retailers plan to utilize such technology, volumes must be kept at a level that is strictly between users. Employees represent the… Continue

The San Diego Business Journal hosted their Third Annual “Most Admired CEO” event last night at the Marriott Hotel & Marina in downtown San Diego. This was hands down my favorite event of the year and for good reason. Four of the five clients nominated were honored with the “Most Admired CEO” award. A total of 65 finalists were nominated and then competed in one of the following categories: Public, Private, Nonprofit and Government Agency. Stalwart Communication’s clients who were named amo… Continue

How to pitch reporters without being annoying

A colleague and I recently had lunch with the Managing Editor of a well known publication here in San Diego and the topic of pushy PR folks came up. I wish I could say I was surprised to hear him say that he had been stalked by a PR rep, but the reality is, some people take it too far and won’t accept when a journalist isn’t interested in a story. While their persistence might be admired by their bosses, it’s certainly not appreciated by the other side. Being aware of these pet peeves by writers… Continue

Why HBO’s “Entourage” reminds me a lot of PR

Last night while watching a few old seasons of HBO’s hit “Entourage,” something an actor said stuck me. While conversing with his talent agent, he said, “After you get me a job, then I’ll start trusting you!” While I’m in no way trying to compare the acting industry with PR, there is a relationship that takes place between actors and agents tha… Continue

Why having a social media strategy is a must

Thrilled is a word that best describes how I felt last week when asked to spearhead the Twitter and Facebook accounts for one of our clients. I’ve always been a big advocate of this company joining Twitter so you can imagine my enthusiasm when I learned that I’d be the force driving their brand on these social networks. While I was anxious to get rolling, I’ve been fortunate enough to listen in on a few interviews with Crosby Noricks, a phenomenal Social Media Strategist at Red Door Interactive,… Continue

Get your clients speaking!

In previous blogs I’ve addressed how spreading the wealth within a company is extremely important. Highlighting various personnel in media releases is well and good because it demonstrates that your organization is comprised of many experts, but it shouldn’t stop there. Companies can recognize and benefit from their greatest assets by encouraging them to speak at meetings, conferences and seminars. In addition, associations exist in various industries that could benefit from the valuable experie… Continue

Vick begins to mend his reputation

Michael Vick served his time and now he’s returning to the NFL. While many still feel strongly against his reinstatement, fact of the matter is, he did his time and he’s got a sharp PR team holding his hand as he attempts to mend his reputation. For those of you who caught CBS’ 60 Minutes interview, Vick not only admitted shame to what he did and a new found appreciation for animals, but the segment also touched on his work ethic. It’s evident that his PR team wants to embrace the idea th… Continue

How PR firms can give back

While many PR firms are focused on securing media coverage for their clients, which is expected in the job, some firms are going the extra step and offering their services to assist nonprofit organizations. Due to limited funding, these organizations don’t have the resources to hire a firm and rarely have a professional in-house to handle marketing or PR duties. At Stalwart Communications, our clients remain our first priority, however we fi… Continue

Why I got into an argument this weekend….over Twitter

This past Saturday I spent most of my day enjoying the sunshine and hanging out with my friends. We chatted about the upcoming Chargers season, how terrible the Padres are doing and then the conversation turned to work and Twitter. I’ve sat through numerous social media seminars and have been an active participant long enough to know that it’s an extremely valuable tool for businesses if the following two conditions apply: 1) Your stakeholders (potential customers, partners and influencers) use… Continue
