DC Velocity - How to write a Vested Outsourcing contract

I get asked a lot about Stalwart Communications' Pay-on-Performance fee breakdown. While I'm somewhat elusive on the specifics, this article that was sent to me by a good friend is about a close as I've seen to nailing how we do it.

I would encourage other consultants - particularly my valued colleagues in the PR agency business who continue to be resistant to this model at their own peril.… Continue

Don't get boxed in by clichés

Have you noticed that "thinking outside the box" seems stale and homogeneous? It seems the collective overuse of clichs has put us back inside the box. We're beating a dead horse by pushing the envelope, playing it by ear and hitting the nail on the head. We know all these cliches well and that means our readers do too. The more we use them, the more they lose their…

John Warrillow - 6 Reasons to Stop Charging by the Hour

This is a great example of why I'm a big fan of Pay-on-Performance PR. Author John Warrillow used his lawyer as the example, but he could have very well been speaking about his PR firm.

The amazing thing to me is how many folks opposed is idea in comment left on the blog. It's… Continue

How to uncover your next big idea

As I was reading the August issue of PRSA Tactics, I came across an article that really caught my eye. In the PR world, we’re constantly brainstorming new ideas and pitches. It’s not uncommon when we experience writers block from time to time either. However, it’s how we power through those rough spots. The article “Exercise your brain for inspiration” is a great read for people in any profession and provides great tips for uncovering your next big idea.

Exercise… Continue

Lessons from a pro: How to Handle a PR Crisis

I picked up an Entrepreneur Magazine at the airport this weekend and came across a fantastic Q&A with Ronn Torossian, founder of New York-based 5W Public Relations, about dealing with a PR nightmare. Great advice for both public relations professionals and businesses. …

Hard Knocks: “This is a results-based business”

Last night was the season premiere of HBOs hit, “Hard Knocks.” Each year this reality sports show documents the training camp of one NFL team. Last year, it was the Cincinnati Bengals and this year it’s no other than the New York Jets. I HATE the Jets! That team broke my heart last January when they beat the Chargers in the play-offs at home. In addition, they acquired a San Diego player that I loved to watch and admired greatly. As I sat on…

Getting creative to drive people into your business

I recently went grocery shopping late one night, just a quick trip to Whole Foods in the San Diego Hillcrest neighborhood. To my surprise, I had to travel to upper-deck garage parking to find a spot. I quickly realized why after stumbling upon about 100 people watching the movie "Julia & Julia" on the roof of the garage. I asked a security guard what was up and he said they do movie nights every so…

Expanding your client list

One of our clients recently brought up a really interesting point that I think a lot of business owners lose sight of over time. Companies can become obsessed with growing their client list just for the sake of having a lot of clients. Some PR agencies will go after any organization only to have another name added to their portfolio. The problem with this is that the agencies are then forced to work in industries or with companies that don’t really excite or motivate them, and they’re… Continue

Shedding some 'Light' on the Union-Tribune for PR pros

We recently went to a Q&A session with Jeff Light, the Union-Tribune's new vice president and editor. The session was strictly for PR professionals sponsored by the San Diego chapter of PRSA. Light told us the content strategy for the paper is to follow a map of interest in the community and put expert voices on each interest. He said focus areas include: intellectual capital such as bio-tech, universities… Continue
