San Diego Ad Club interviews Alex Bogusky

Last week I attended a happy hour with many of the folks from Red Door Interactive and while conversing with Morgan Witt (@morganwitt), I became aware of an interview that the San Diego Ad Club conducted with Alex Bogusky (@bogusky), Owner of Crispin Porter + Bogusky. With advertising not being my particular area of expertise, I found… Continue

“All-U-Can Eat” Marketing Campaign: Thumbs Down

With the current state of the economy, companies are tasked with finding new ways to attract and retain customers. Some offer discounts and other organizations such as sports teams are devising weekly promotions to attract fans in hopes of increasing attendance.

While I’m a Storm Baseball fan and understand the need to offer special promotions throughout the week to boost attendance, I’m not a advocate of their “Fat Tuesday” marketing campaign. Their All-U-Can Eat Belly Buster food… Continue

We’re Dying Out Here! …one hourly rate at a time.

It’s no secret that recessions, big old nasty deep ones like what we’re currently experiencing, are particularly hard on public relations budgets…which in turn is bad for the hundreds of PR firms in receipt of the shrinking largeness of those budgets…which in turn sends thousands of PR folks (often the young good ones, unfortunately) out on the street looking for new employment. But does it really have to?

Not in all cases. Not if we in the profession and those that employ us, would… Continue

Controversy over advertising slogans

UPS’ most recent move is the expansion of their services to include document and brochure printing as well as sales of office supplies, and they’re spreading the word through a $30 million “We do more than shipping” advertising campaign.

We Do More! Well Don’t, criticizes companies for using such slogans and advises against it. The article states that customers don’t think about doing anything more than… Continue

Marketing tip - your best assets may be your competitors!

Two days ago, I posted a quick Tweet commenting on a recent letter to the editor by the Public Relations Society of America's Chairman and CEO. I ended the 140-character post by saying he should advocate the elimination of retainers.

Though unintentional, I quickly realized that I struck a raw nerve with a fellow PR practitioner that resulted in a 10-round debate match on… Continue

A new marketing approach that is yielding positive results

Disney’s marketing team is taking new measures to distance themselves from junk food and is adopting a more healthy approach. They previously used fast-food chains and cereal boxes to reach their target audience, but in consideration of significantly high child obesity rates, they’ve become more socially responsible and cancelled contracts that were linked to sugary or fatty foods. The company is looking to improve their image by associating Disney characters with healthy food choices such as… Continue

Memo to Congress - Stop Holding Hearings on the Newspaper Industry!!

This would be funnier if it wasn't for the fact that valuable time and taxpayer money is going to this.

A recent Editor & Publisher Magazine Web article noted that current Massachusetts Senator and former Presidential candidate John Kerry, D-Mass., will held hearings in Washington, D.C., lastweek to review the economic problems facing the newspaper industry.

The hearings were slated to go before the Senate… Continue
